Clothes hangers are more important than you think!

Posted on October 15, 2010

Clothes hangers. Not important at all, right? Wrong! Clothes hangers are actually one of the most important items in your house. Imagine a world with no clothes hangers. Your clothes would always need to be ironed before you wore them. You would find strange stains and wrinkles on your clothes when you put them on. Closets would simply be stacks of clothing and there would be no easy way to pick out what you want to wear to work, to dinner, or for a night out on the town. Clothes hangers are very unappreciated, but they do a wonderful job of making our lives easier and keeping us looking good.

Many people don't give their closets a second thought. Home owners will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to remodel their homes but keep the wardrobe the same as it was in 1923! Even when they consider changing the closets, they still keep the same old wire coat hangers that they got for free from the dry cleaners. That's a big mistake!

What they don't know is that by using the wrong coat hangers, they are actually damaging their expensive clothing. Clothing hangers serve a unique purpose and over time if you are using the wrong clothes hangers you will find that they have damaged your clothing. There is more to it than that though. Have you ever wanted to pull a piece of clothing out of the closet and found that the hanger is tangled up with six or seven others? Frustrating, right? Wouldn't you pay $10 to never have to deal with that situation again? That's about all it would cost you to buy tangle free clothes hangers and yet, the idea of buying new clothes hangers almost never occurs to people.

Your closet is filled to the brim with expensive clothing and yet, you haven't spent an extra $10-$20 to make sure that your clothing is protected. It doesn't make sense, does it? Don't worry though, you aren't alone. Most people never think about the humble clothes hanger.

In fact, there are a wide variety of clothes hangers available for different purposes. You can buy clothes hangers of different materials, shapes, sizes, and function. For example, if you are hanging a heavy wool suit or jacket, you will probably want to use a heavy wooden clothes hanger. You can also use these for sweaters since the wide body of the hanger keeps the material from stretching and developing holes. In addition, very light materials like silk and lace do best on wide bodied wooden hangers.

Plastic hangers are good for all purpose sorts of hanging. Dress shirts, dresses, blouses, and other torso wear can be hung on the common thick tube plastic hanger without fear of the hanger itself causing any sort of unnatural creasing into the fabric of the clothes. In fact, these are the most all purpose of the hangers. The plastic coat hangers come in a variety of sizes and you can use them to coordinate clothing for summer, fall, winter, or spring. Color coding is also a nice way to make your wardrobe a more pleasant place to gaze upon.

One important fact about wire hangers is that when you get your clothes from the dry cleaner, the hanger usually has a tissue paper over it. Wire hangers without this kind of protection can destroy your clothing! The best use for a wire clothes hanger is for getting into your car when you have locked the keys in it! It's usually a good idea to transfer clothes from wire hangers to the better quality plastic or wood first thing when you get them home.

While it would seem that one hanger is the same as another, the truth is quite different. Because of the manufacturing process, hangers vary in quality function, and style. Make sure you are buying from a reputable manufacturer of clothes hangers to avoid having problems in the future with broken hangers or damaged clothing.

There are specialized hangers designed for skirts, blouses, and pants. It's important that you use the right kind of hanger because otherwise you risk leaving ugly creases, folds, and marks on your clothing. You wouldn't use a wire brush to clean your teeth, right?

The first clothes hangers for retail sales were used in the 19th century in Michigan, USA. Since then they have really caught on with merchants! Clothes hangers are a booming industry in the retail clothing sector because the way the clothes hang on the hanger determines how good or bad the clothing looks. That has a direct effect on whether you buy the clothes or not.

It's equally important in your home. Be sure that you give some thought to your clothes hangers. They really are more important than you think!
